Dear Chief Editor, With reference to comments posted by Mr. Tejas Jani, Ms.Srichandra Mukherjee and me, your clarification in the matter is still awaited. On two earlier occasions you mailed me that my stories are my property and that I could publish it with another publishing house. Does that still hold good? How will my future submissions, if any, be affected by the clause? I would greatly appreciate an early reply from you (YSC) so that I can decide upon my future submissions. Wishing you & YSC all the very best, Thanks & regards,

    Shyam Sundar Bulusu

  2. Srichandra says

Wanted to post this in YSC: I too agree with Tejas and Bulusu Sir. In the past, when the exclusivity clause was not in place, I too had republished my stories in my personal blog with the due acknowledgement that it was previously published in YSC! But now that I am bound by the contract, I would lose my story and the right to my creativity forever. Which would mean that no readers, other than YSC readers would be able to read my stories and my creativity would be locked in YSC forever! Forgive my saying this, and I do not know about others, but for me this is like taking away the creative freedom of writers. Instead, if you had added clauses like adequate acknowledgement of YSC platform along with link to the website, it would have sufficed. Or atleast the permission to publish in one’s personal blog would have also been better. Frankly, I am indebted to YSC for making a writer out of me but I wouldn’t want to give away my creative freedom. It is like asking a singer who has sung for a particular recording company, not to ever sing the song again. I was in two minds if I should write this letter or not. But then I decided for it because I sincerely feel and believe that I am a well wisher of YSC and as a well wisher I should share my honest opinion. Thanks!

  3. says

I agree with Mr. Tejas jani. If this is true, then it is sad and discouraging. The matter needs clarification URGENTLY. Have I committed a mistake in returning to the YSC fold? I shall submit my views after hearing YSC’s views.

    Thanks & regards,

    Shyam Sundar Bulusu

  4. says

    Dear Editor,

While I understand you must have had your reasons to amend the Terms of Service of YSC, the clause of exclusivity of content posted on YSC (i.e. a writer cannot share the content on YSC if it is already published elsewhere AND the content first published on YSC cannot be later published elsewhere) seems a little discouraging to me personally.

I have been associated with YSC for a long time now and just at the stroke of the hour when I was about to publish my next short story on YSC, I came across this clause. While I appreciate the platform this club provides to the writers, I also believe the writers should have the freedom to publish their content wherever they want so far as it is their original creation.

Whenever I queried if I could share my story (which is already published on YSC) elsewhere, in digital or print, YSC had taken the stand in the past that I am the owner of the content and I am free to publish it anywhere and it was just that you cannot delete the story from YSC. This seemed fair to me, to be honest.

As many of the YSC writers have their personal creative writing blogs too and the audience of their blogs and YSC may not be common most of the times. As it is suggested that the writer is free to publish 4-5 lines teaser and link of the published story to other website(s)/blog(s), I would want to have my creation fully available to read as it is. And here there are no commercials involved as yet, trust me.

Anyhow, I, and I am sure many other writers, would start to have second thoughts on publishing at YSC with this new exclusivity clause in place now. As a well-wisher of YSC, I thought I should be sharing my honest feedback on what is new.

    Wish you good luck. Cheers!

    Tejas
