|SETTING||Terrace OR Bedroom OR Living Hall|
It has been 11 long years, longer than usual for her. Kavya, deep in her thoughts stands alone at the terrace, at this odd hour past midnight. She misses her elder sister, Vanya, in silent and lamenting tears. Cold winds bring to her the memories from the past which has always been so resurrected in her. she remembers all, the way they used to play , dance and chatter round the clock , all those petty fights for childish things , which every time ended with a noble sacrifice of her caring sister. Those golden days of unbound joys were the best days of her life. Ever since after those seven years, she has merely survived but not lived!
Years back, one usual evening, mother brought her two little daughters, two identical black overcoats. Kavya and Vanya, ran fast to grab the best one, but they were as identical as the little girls were. The two, dancing like kittens in their new furry attires, went upstairs to play. This was their leisure, playing in the terrace garden and painting the walls up there. An hour of relentless playing and flaunting their outfits, before their mother started calling them for the evening milk. And milk was a childhood passion for them! Both ran towards the steps. It was kind of fun for them to reach out fast for their yummy delight. Pulling, pushing and holding were common. Vanya was just few steps closer to the door, closer enough to lead. Kavya saw her moving past the door and descending her first step, and suddenly grabbed Vanya’s overcoat’s belt to stay in.
“ aah..I’ll be the first!!” , thrilled Kavya uttered .
“Come on, girls …Waiting for my little flowers to climb down!”
Vanya , being pulled back by the coat she wore, suddenly pulled her arms off the sleeves , to move on… and all of a sudden was freed with some extra energy .
“Yes kavu, come on! We’ll be first! “
Instantly, Kavya fell back with the coat at the threshold.
And Vanya shrieking with joy and calling her sister looked behind, at once…
She tripped off something, may be her own toe…
Her leg almost twitched, a bone cracked within…
Then one, two, three… she fell down the stairs incessantly,
Rolled, struck and bled.
Deadly stairs, which devoured her sister. Sometimes she wonders, it was not the stairs but her own self that did. Only she has been the cause of such misfortune, she and those petty races . But, sometimes she feels it was something sinister that those dark overcoats brought with them, may be some bad omens or some curses! And then, she wonders if she would have fallen down the stairs and quenched their lusty thirst with her own blood. Never thereafter have she climbed them alone, but tonight.
Kavya has grown tired of carrying this burden now. No angelic sister by her side anymore, and a mom whom she has seen crying secretively at nights. Even the mother says so, the thing of bad ominous overcoats and bad time, often to soothe themselves. But Kavya knows her generous mother and she often reads the dual language of love and hatred in her wet eyes, and she knows that she is cursed in heavens for making her mom cry!
But tonight, on her birthday, her sister’s birthday, she wakes from her sleep and climbs over her fears, those stairs, to be closer to her sister and her reminiscences. She finds those walls over which their childhood abstract art was registered. Those seemingly meaningless lines that speaks volumes to her. And so, she is drifted for a while. The zeitgeist fills her mind- the fun, the feeling, those games, those overcoats , the milk , the mom’s call , that shrieking with fun…and jumping to run …and…..
And then, with a start!
She is back again, to dark present, the now! Bursting into tears, colder than the breeze. She feels the terrace under her feet getting even colder. Unbearable to stand anymore, she moves towards the railing, bends… and gives away herself to the cold winds that promise her to ride her to Vanya.
