I once heard a young girl say to her mother “My fingers are tiny and fat like yours mom. I feel like hiding them”
I kept any words I wanted to tell
because that was me before, which rang a bell
that’s how she is made to feel imperfect with her body.
Now, you gave one more reason to hide when you find more reasons to hide your own.
The more trival ways you find to lose your worth, the more lost will you be
little do you know that how you feel matters way more than what others see
And that resilient and strong women built a whole world around her children
so, how dare you mock her when her only compass was the immense love and care.
Wear them like a shield for this world maybe cold.
Wear them like a badge of honor, grow with them now that’s bold.
Don’t reject any of it instead be grateful that you have a part of her, the divine instilled in you
Cherish all you’re gifted and instead of changing you, change your view.
Mensuration Culture
Last Dashain I heard a sister cried because she could not put tika and periods was to blame
That’s the first time I received blessings on my periods, do you think it’s a shame?
How can a girl be worshipped like a goddess at once and be made impure the next she bleeds
How can following the conventional culture add up to her virtue and good deeds?
A virgin girl is pure and her being a mother is praised
But with her natural biological process, questions of her impurity are raised.
Children are god gifted and god gifted are those periods
They’re signs of her fertility
So, why confuse her with culture, norms and values leading towards uncertainty?
If you’re only practicing traditions of your respective place
Were you born less fortunate, you’d have been practicing the social evil ‘Chaupadi’ according to this race?
You’re educated, ain’t it your duty to speak up for your given rights when your culture slaps you some label?
For you ‘its okay’ following the mensuration culture, you didn’t live in a cowshed or a hut, but remember the same things for many did not seem so stable.
