The football’s on the ground,
Oh, so colourful and attractive and new,
It held me spellbound,
Sparkling in the sunlight; splashed with dew.
Trying to get more possession,
But getting slide tackled,
The coach yelling his lungs out with aggression,
We get a free kick, the ball into the goal curled.
Staring at the ball of cork and leather,
And the heavy bat of wood,
Fielders run helter-skelter,
A big hit: everyone cheered and stood.
Taking my run up, heart in mouth,
On my debut match,
The batsman hit the ball south,
And, oh the joy of my very first catch.
Racket glistening in the sun,
Metal polished with glam,
A shuttlecock full of feathery fun,
Ready to face a slam.
Bouncing up and down the court,
Jumping and hitting over the net,
Oh so light, I feel afloat,
Ready to win this set.
Healthy arms and legs you need,
To go a-swimming,
The rules of the swimming pool you must heed,
And with air your lungs a-brimming.
I dive in with hardly a splash,
Arms thrashing and kicking with my legs,
And past the life guard I dash,
‘Don’t splash me please,’ he begs.
A long wooden stick curled at the end,
Used by Grandpa for hammering thieves,
And a little ball around the pitch it will send,
The national game of India, as long as everyone believes.
Someone passes the ball to me,
Past the goal keeper, I smash it into the net,
With the crowd rejoicing, I am so happy,
For the trophy, we’ll soon get.
Hands and legs you need on the trampoline,
Having loads of fun,
Beginners feeling very keen,
And of exercise you’ll get a ton.
Jumping up and down, arms flailing in the air,
I turn and twist and fall,
Even with people laughing I don’t care,
Cause I’ve just learnt to do a gumball!
Football, cricket, badminton, swimming, hockey, trampoline,
All these sports I really adore,
I feel happy inside (though my outsides aren’t what you’d call clean),
Then I’d go play sports some more.
