I LOVE YOU
I’m breathing this to you
sighing, singing softly,
from a stage
with no one to watch,
from atop a hill
with a twirling, descending valley path
adorned with slivers
of silver twilight
dancing softly on the emerald grass.
I’m reading this to you
from a bombed site in Afghanistan,
from atop the highest pyramid
and from the streets of Paris.
I’m sending these words to you
through a pigeon,
and a letter
inked in my blood,
and the email
that pings your phone.
I’m sending this-
without a return address.
I’m reading this
like this is the last thing
I’ll ever read.
I’m reading this
like this is the last thing
you’ll ever hear.
I’m reading this is hope
that you’ll find me.
I’m reading this in despair
that I won’t let you.
I’m screaming this
to get your attention,
I’m whispering
to let you be unbothered.
This is ephemeral.
This is infinite.
This is a proclamation of love;
this is a declaration of war.
This is me calling your name,
bereft.
POET’S NOTE:
I wrote this one for a class assignment. It was inspired by Romeo and Juliet and Wuthering Heights. I’ve read both books countless times and am in love with them. So this poem is like homage to their excellence. It focuses on one-sided love and star crossed families. She can’t have him, and she can’t live without at least declaring her love. The teacher had asked us for an antithesis (a figure of speech) driven poem. The use of antithesis (use of opposites in a single sentence, in layman terms) shows the struggle she goes through while professing her love… What do you think? Do leave a comment. All comments, suggestions and criticisms are welcomed. I’d love to hear what my readers think of my work.
