We all like stories, especially when they remind us of what we are and what we have become. Probably, you identify with a character who is always late to work or does not turn up assignments on time. So do you want to hear a new story in which there are only two main characters – one Dr. Goobey and the other a dwarf, called Hasmukh.
Hasmukh was having a terrible headache and he approached Dr. Goobey for a medicine to get rid of his headache. Dr. Goobey was not in his best spirit, as he had just concluded a verbal debate with his wife – which he had royally lost. He spoke to Hasmukh rashly, “Get the heck out of here, I don’t have time to take care of you.”
Hasmukh was crestfallen, but he noticed his headache was gone. Delighted, he thought this was the way Dr. Goobey treated his patients.
“A genius indeed,” he exclaimed! “How did the doctor know without my telling him that I had a headache. He seems to be a yogi of sorts. He can read minds and he can treat without medicine! Indeed, I should spread the news so that all people can benefit from his gift.”
So he thought that it’s his job to tell all his friends and even passersby of Dr. Goobey’s endowments. He also showed them the way to his clinic lest they meet the wrong person. They were very happy to note and set out to his clinic with all their barrage of problems.
At the clinic, Dr. Goobey was still having a hard time coming to terms with the fact that he had added yet another sad defeat to the 67920 debates he had lost to his wife. “She must be enjoying now, feeling on top of the world. How could I always lose? Afterall, I must be able to think up some good points.”
He became aware for the first time that she must have been winning all this while because of her superior intelligence. Afterall, winners deserve all the credit. They become popular and important over time.
While he was still musing over his recent loss, he heard a loud banging noise at the door. Startled, he wondered if his wife had started a propaganda to make his defeat public! Shambles and ruin crossed his mind. He shuddered to think how he could save his face. Things were quickly slipping out of control.
With great courage, he mustered himself to the door and was surprised to see a crowd of people, waiting to jump into the clinic. Seeing their enthusiastic expression made him happy. They greeted him and told him that he was indeed a blessing to the town. Without his presence, the curse of disease would fall upon them all.
Dr. Goobey could not believe his ears. How did this miracle happen? Was it possible that his wife had sent these people to mock him? He scratched his head in wonder. He could only dream of something like this happening to him. The people scrambled inside and waited for their turn. Dr.Goobey watched the people and felt satisfied. He asked them to walk in one-by-one.
While the people awaited their turn, Dr. Goobey examined each patient and prescribed medication for them. They got better in no time and Dr. Goobey became famous overnight. He felt very good that years of diligent practice had borne fruit at last. Now he had a real good reason to brag before his wife.
Back at home, he told his wife that lady luck had shone on him and he had become the talk of the town. He added that being perseverant and committed had paid off.
In the meantime, Hasmukh had heard about how the people he spoke to got the right treatment for their malaise and so he set out to thank Dr. Goobey for all the help he had given.
On his second visit, he was surprised to meet an all smiling Dr. Goobey. When the doctor enquired about his ailment, Hasmukh told him about how he was cured of his nagging headache and how he had spoken to many about the doctor’s rare ability to treat patients.
Dr. Goobey understood everything now and he said something that changed the atmosphere in the clinic. Dr. Goobey said in a soft voice, “When you came in, I was a patient of sorts. I had low self-esteem, I had insurmountable problems. You cured me of all my ailments, with your simple and generous attitude. Instead of feeling angry and upset, you turned the situation around and thought well of me. Indeed, you are the true doctor of souls and I owe my success and fame to you. God sent you to teach me that no situation is truly hopeless. For the first time, I silenced my wife with my success. She had a very poor opinion of me, but because you believed in me, I have become totally different. Thank you for being patient with me and thank you so much for your love and care. I am glad to have found a very special friend in you!”
Moral of the Story: Always speak good things about people. It will reach them sometime or the other and build them up in ways you cannot imagine.
