Tomie put little Thomas into the cupboard at the side of the playroom. Thomas was the toy sailor which Uncle Tim had gifted him for Xmas and it was indeed a precious one. He slowly closed the playroom which he shared with his sister Saly.
Thomas sat on the lower portion of the cupboard. He turned around to see who sat beside him – Bombo the black Teddy, Amie the Doll and Wee Wee the laughing Monkey.
“I really hate this place. The toyshop was much better” sulked Thomas.
“Hey it’s a much better place than you think. Tomorrow morning you will have fun playing with us and many more friends. There’s Bluey the Parrot, Jojo the Golliwog, Mumu the Cat and many more.” Bombo patted Thomas.
“It’s been a month since I came here” Thomas was angry. He didn’t like any of the other toys. They were nice to him but he never liked any of them.
Last night he had suggested to Juku the Jack that they sneak out during the night. Juku had not only laughed at him but shared the news with every other ‘toy being’.
But tonight was Thomas’ day. He had found a way out.
It was past ten and all the toys were fast asleep. Thomas slowly crept out of the cupboard. He opened the playroom and walked into the corridor. The whole house remained silent. All were fast asleep.
Thomas jumped through the small window in the corridor to the garden. He was happy and giggling.
“I am free. I can sneak out every night and be back before the morning.’
Thomas walked through the streets. The streets were empty but it felt heavenly. He could see the beach at a distance. He had always wanted to see the real sea.
“Oops it’s so cold in here but it feels nice. I feel like a real sailor……..” Thomas played with the waves in the water.
“Only if I had a boat” Thomas dreamed as he lay on the beach sand gazing the star studded sky.
Thomas walked back into the streets. It was already getting late. He could hear the early morning birds. The streets were still empty. He walked happily whistling.
“What a night” Thomas laughed to himself.
“ Wuf Wuf…. Grrrrrrrrrr”
Thomas wondered what was that he heard. He turned around and to his dismay Tiger stood right before him. He recollected how he and Wee Wee had got the scare of their life when Tomie played in the garden and Mr. Drew’s dog Tiger had come running through the open gates. But little Tomie was with him then. Wee Wee and Thomas had hugged each other tightly.
Now he was alone. Before Thomas could know what was happening he was on his feet fast heading through the streets.
“ Uuuuf…..This time I made it. ” . Thomas panted as he jumped through the window to the corridor.
The playroom was still silent and all the toys were fast asleep.
“I love this place….. I am never going to leave this place for anything” Thomas whispered to himself.
“I told you so … This is a much better place than you think.”
Thomas looked at Bombo. He was half asleep. Thomas laughed to himself. He was so happy to be sleeping with his friends at home.
