Short Story – An ordinary day turned extraordinary…. Or almost.

*huge yawn*
The class was getting boring, and I couldn’t help yawning continuously. I did oversleep yesterday, probably that’s the reason why I was yawning so much.
Goodness! When will this class get over?
I shifted in my seat, and started scribbling on my book, to while away my time.
Being a back bench-er was a blessing in these difficult times.You don’t have to pretend like you’re paying attention, when the class is hell boring.
I looked to the front. The teacher, as usual, was lecturing in the same boring monotonous way.The front bench girls and boys nodding their heads like school kids. Wont their necks break, sitting right under the teachers nose, and staring up at her every single second in class?
Then comes the middle bench people; the normal people, some studious, some not.
And then us – the non-listeners of the class – the least interested, the least bothered.
Well, to be frank the guys at the back were even worse. They didn’t even bother taking notes. But yes, They end up scoring acceptably anyways, so no worries.
*BANG*
What the…
We all turned. The sound came from the guys side, and they were looking at each other wondering where that sound came from.
“What is the problem there?”,ma’am’s shrill voice floated all the way to back of the class. The guys were laughing, some of them giggling.
umm… Do guys giggle? Isn’t that meant for girls?
Okay, my class is always different, in all possible weird ways.
“What was that sound?”, the teacher stepped down from the platform, and walked to the boys side, her tiny figure getting immersed among the tall boys seated there. Girls were all murmuring.
*BANG*
Shucks! Now it came from right behind me, and I almost fell out of my chair. I turned around and found the teacher standing there looking at me suspiciously.
What? What did i do? I thought.
*BANG*
The teacher swayed on the spot for a moment and then fell unconscious. Blood started oozing out of her head, onto the floor.
Somebody screamed from behind me.The whole class was huddled together now, staring at the motionless figure on the floor.
Pin drop silence…
“Someone call The Dean!”, somebody shouted.
Being a class representative, I moved towards the door, to go and inform The Dean and call somebody for help. The other representatives Renessa, Rayne and Godse joined me.
I still couldn’t figure out what had happened.
*BANG*
The door of the classroom banged close, locking us all up in the classroom. Rayne tried to pull the door open, but it just wouldn’t budge!
I started panicking…
The room suddenly burst into flames, and amongst all the smoke and fire, all I could see were my classmates running helter-skelter; some gobbled up by the fire, others screaming for their life, some lifeless on the floor and some others huddled together in the corners.
It wasn’t just the fire. There was something else in the room.
Something more sinister…
I stared in horror as people started disappearing.
I saw William, through the flames, trying to keep the fire at distance, by waving his bag frantically. He was shouting for help.
I pulled Sierra-my best friend- and ran towards William.
“Chasmy!!! What the hell are you doing?”, she screamed through her tears. I pulled her, trying to reach past the smoke to William. I had to get to him before anything happened…
Just as I was about to reach him, he was pulled back by something and he disappeared into the flames.
“WILLIAM!!!”, I screamed.
*SLAP*
uh huh?
Everything disappeared…
No fire, no smoke, No William. The class looked exactly and boringly same as it was before I had fallen asleep.
I looked around sheepishly to see if anybody had noticed me. Sierra was gawking at me.
I stamped her, under the table and she howled. The teacher looked to our side, and we both looked into our books, sincerely taking down notes, and looked up at her innocently.
When she turned back to the board, I heaved a sigh of relief. “Shucks , I fell asleep again”, I said, scribbling in my note again. Sierra chuckled. I scowled at her.
“Its okay, no one saw you except me”, she said, giggling at the sight of relief on my face,”and William of course!!!”
