[Doctor… Doctor…- Short Story Funny]
Recently, my father-in-law was not feeling well. He was complaining various problems; so it was decided that we will first do the necessary tests and then regular checkups. Near to our house, there is one average good hospital with nice pathology and diagnostic centre. We went there for the regular tests: sugar, BP, ECG, Cholesterol etc.
One of my friends told me about a cardiologist, who is one of the best doctors in the town, and he also visits to this hospital but only on request. So, I asked for an appointment with the cardiologist at the hospital. The receptionist said that the cardiologist is a visiting doctor and his timings are not fixed. He may come on the request and when he would confirm then only the hospital would call us. I gave our phone number and came back.
Next day, 2-3 times I called them up and inquired about the doctor but no confirmation. In the evening, I got a call from the hospital. They said that the doctor is coming and we should come in 15 minutes if we want to see the doctor. So, very fast we got ready and started for the hospital. Luckily my husband was at home so we got a lift in his car.
We are living in the state of Tamilnadu. We moved here hardly 3-4 months before, from Bangalore. The local Tamil language is still an unknown language for us. But people here are very nice and cooperating. At places where my Hindi, English or Kannada will not work, people standing nearby, would help us out by translating the conversation.
However, at the hospital, there was a little language problem. When we went there, the receptionist, who was there in the morning and knowing little English, left for the day. I told to other receptionist that we came for the cardiologist; they said “oh, yes, yes, please go to the room number 1.” (in Tamil). I confirmed again and they said the same thing (again in Tamil). We went to room number 1 and a doctor was there. He called us in, asked for the problem, checked the report and my father-in-law and said everything is fine. And in ONLY 5 minutes we were out!!! My father-in-law was very happy with the doctor that he did not change any medicine AND told that everything is fine AND finished very fast coming all the way from ONLY him from other hospital. His face was appearing better and healthier.
We came out and went for payment of the cardiologist consulting fee. There again, with some language problem, after few quick trips from one room to another, one assistant told me that you do not have to pay. I was very surprised and asked why? In broken English and fluent Tamil, she said -“I am sorry, the cardiologist is not coming today; that is why you do not have to pay”. I was shocked. I said that we just visited him. She replied, “No no, he is our physician who is on duty for today; you said that you wanted doctor so we send you there.” And they did not charge anything at all.
Very shocked, I came out and told this incident to my husband and father-in-law, who both were waiting happily for me to go back home. After 5 minute, on the way, my father-in-law said, “This doctor was not good; he did not change any medicine and finished very fast. I want to see another doctor.” Another shock. Although my husband try to tell him that everything is fine, you need not to go to another doctor. Even the doctor who just consulted was very good and would have recommended to cardiologist if there any abnormality but my father-in-law was getting much tensed. His face was changing pale. Finally, for his satisfaction, next day, I took appointment with the cardiologist, at the hospital where he regularly visits. We went there facing wee hour traffic in town and waiting long in queue for the doctor. Finally doctor saw my father-in-law, told him the same thing what yesterday the physician had told. But now my father-in-law was happy and satisfied and full of praises for this doctor.
Happy ending…………
