It was a lovely bright day in the middle of June in 1991 in the heart of Cornwall. Although outside by around the early afternoon it started to get sweltering hot. The BBC local weather forecast on the television last evening did say that the Unitied Kingdom was going to experience the first heatwave of the year. It was expected that the day temperature was going to reach up to 25 degrees celsius.
Hayley, on this very afternoon had just finished Highbourne secondary school and was walking back home cheerily, despite the hot weather. She usually walked backed home from school with her two best friends called Lisa and Hannah. Whom she had been friends with since starting in Year eight. They all had such great fun times together. They would chat endlessly on about topics including fashion, make up and their families. All typical conversations which pretty much all teenage girls had. However this afternoon Lisas mum was going to give a lift in her silver Mercedes car after school finished to both her daughter Lisa and her friend Hannah. On most Wednesday afternoons at 4.30 pm Lisa and Hannah went to the towns local beginners dancing club. Lisa, especially had a big ambition of becoming a professional dancer after leaving school. She had always known that she wanted to be a dancer since she was little. Clear early childhood memories flooded back to her.
One of a taken photo hung on her living room wall of her being dressed up in a pink and white dressing costume when she was five years old. It had to be said that dancing was’t Hayley`s cup of tea. Hayley, who was now 15, still was not sure which career path to take.
Despite that afternoon being so hot and having her school uniform clothes sticking to her body uncomfortably, she still loved the summer. The heat, long days, barbecues and meeting up with friends at the shopping malls. Finally Hayley was outside at her home. Until the end of this week her parents Sam and Emma Walker were having a short summer 3 day break away in Chicago. One postcard came through the post this morning. Stating they were having a wonderful time and loved going to the beach. Her elder sister Tara who was now 17 was staying over at a friends house for the night. So she was home alone. She got quickly washed and changed out of her school clothes. She made herself a prepared chicken curry with rice and quickly ate it being hungry.
She and her friends were talking about the urban legend game of Bloody Mary. Lisa said if you chant her name many times in front of a mirror her scary looking face will appear. Having never done it before she was willing to play the game herself tonight at midnight.
So at midnight she went upstairs with three lit candles to the bathroom and locked the door. She chanted Bloody Marys name 4 times and then for two seconds there was complete silence. She waited…..with her heart rate soaring. At that very second she was convinced she saw a scary black face silhouette image drowning the mirror. She shrieked out loud and hurriedly switched on the bathroom light. Big relief.
At that exact moment her sister came home and saw her troubled looking face. She asked her what was wrong. She retold the tale of the Bloody Mary game and her experience. She laughed and told her how her and her friends when they were nine years old played the same game in the school bathroom and got freaked out. Her sister reassured her that staring in a dark mirror gives you unwanted illusions in your mind. As science has proven.
She vowed to never play the game again though.
