I took a day off combined it with weekends and went to nearby hill resort with sole intention to write few short stories before I come back home. But I was stumped to find that even peaceful beautiful nature could not help me to get ideas for short stories. I tries to remember all incidents from my life and to build stories around them but no avail. Somehow I was not getting the kick start. Then I joined a group of children who were playing “carry the word”. One will say one word and then next one, without any delay, had to find a new word that was connected to first word – for example it goes like: tree, green, leaf, fall, winter, summer, holiday… and so on. Wow, amazing way I found it for short story idea generation. Inspired by children’s game, I used following method to generate ideas for short stories writing:
(1) List few locations – picnic, sea beach, cinema hall, office, station, airport, graveyard, shopping mall, school or college…
(2) List few themes – love proposal accepted, love proposal rejected, cheating friend, helping friends, cheating husband/wife, faithful to husband/wife, truth wins, honesty is best policy, honesty is not very useful…
(3) List few objects – TV, computer, laptop, delivery van, spectacles, coffee mug, cap, handkerchief, coat, vase, knife, lighter…
And now fun begins. Prepare chits of locations, themes and objects and randomly select one location, one theme and one object. Now you got the plot – a new one. For example, “Theme faithful to husband/wife at location cinema hall where coffee mug plays a very vital role”
Hope you find this helpful. Any other way to generate ideas to write short stories is welcome..
