Welcome to discussion topic “How to Write Short Stories”. In this topic, we invite writers to discuss tips for how to write short stories, and readers to comment their liking and disliking. Hi,
For me, short stories are written in three ways:1.The theme or main event/plot of the story may come first as a one line idea. If this is the case, the, I play word association and write about 50-100 words around this idea, then build a story using this build up.
2. We may have amazing phrases come to us sometimes, but no plot to go with it. If so, then I jot down all these vague but absolutely marvelous phrases and then forget about it or read lots of other stories in the meantime. Usually, in this scheme of things, a story or an ad or a piece of news could trigger a context for the phrase. Then the story gradually develops a body.
3. Sometimes, a story comes to us in its full avatar in a dream, or during a break at work, etc. Then I stop whatever I’m doing and write the synopsis down. I make time for it later and add all the other devices that make up a good short story.
