Hi,
For me, short stories are written in three ways:
1.The theme or main event/plot of the story may come first as a one line idea. If this is the case, the, I play word association and write about 50-100 words around this idea, then build a story using this build up.
2. We may have amazing phrases come to us sometimes, but no plot to go with it. If so, then I jot down all these vague but absolutely marvelous phrases and then forget about it or read lots of other stories in the meantime. Usually, in this scheme of things, a story or an ad or a piece of news could trigger a context for the phrase. Then the story gradually develops a body.
3. Sometimes, a story comes to us in its full avatar in a dream, or during a break at work, etc. Then I stop whatever I’m doing and write the synopsis down. I make time for it later and add all the other devices that make up a good short story.
I hope that was useful.
