Review of Short Story: “IT NEVER FADES” by RAMYA DHINAKARAN
Dear Writer, Thank you for choosing us to publish your story and asking us for the review. Please find below our review based on five key elements of short stories:
Character: There are two main characters — the young lover boy and the shy, hesitant girl. It is essential to restrict number of characters in a short story as it is done in this story. Although both characters, the boy and the girl, are almost equally highlighted, characterization of the lover boy is missing a little. Only at the end it becomes clear that main character is the hesitant girl. Furthermore, role of the lover boy is suddenly become miniscule without offering proper transition to heighten lead role of the girl. For level of conflict shown in this story, it is essential to portray characters in more detail.
Setting: This story uses many timeframes. Typically short stories are written in short and as much as possible single timeframe. Nonetheless all timeframes used in this story need same setting i.e. chatting and texting and thus do not create any significant obstructions in flow of the plot. On other hand, setting in the story is very little and thus made the plot dull. Use of actual texts and chat-snippets would have provided very lively setting for young readers.
Plot: A clichéd plot is attempted to be offered interestingly but inappropriate point of view restricted it. Who can express feeling of the shy, hesitant girl other than herself? Additionally many events are offered in less text. Although short story may not have luxury of text, selected events must be described with needed detail. For example something bad was posted on the lover’s profile that upsets the girl would have been explained in bit more detail along with detail persuasion of lover boy.
Conflict: This short story uses conflict precisely for the theme. Adolescents’ infatuation turning into feelings, realization of feeling, fear of social and family reactions, half-hearted break-up, and then repenting all are shown beautifully in this short story.
Theme: Theme is backbone of a short story. All other elements must support and be tightly coupled with the theme. The theme social network romance of middleclass teenagers would have been supported by juicy plot and settings to make story more interesting.
Having said the above, we strongly believe that story is an art and every art is invaluable – there is nothing good or bad as art is beyond boundaries of these adjectives. Therefore the creator is the best person to decide whether the creation meets her expectation. We like your story in total and our comments are just objective comparison with the patterns we observed in most liked short stories.
