When I opened my eyes for the first time,
To this world, all I saw was ‘you’
You were my world, my everything,
Mother-there was just you.
You taught me how to face the world,
To fight and defend myself,
To be humble, caring and sincere,
My heart still calls out for you.
I sit by my window at twilight,
A silent tear runs down my cheek,
I close my eyes and wait for the night,
Until I hear the crickets creak.
I open my eyes to the stars,
Searching.. “where are you?”
They’d said if I called you from my heart, you’d come,
I see a vision, “Mother is that really you?!”
I must’ve been dreaming by then,
Else how could I see her?
She kissed my forehead,
And rested my restless head on her shoulder.
“Don’t cry my love, I’m here for you,
You know I’d always come,
I’m always right beside you,
My darling child, my son.”
I protested, ”Why Mother, how could you leave me?
You know I am just nine!
Oh Mother! you were my guiding light,
How will I ever know what’s right?!”
She smiled like an angel,
That I knew she’d become,
And calmed my nerves down,
“My child, my fighter, life teaches you lessons,
Sometimes early on.
Just as the day ends in the night,
And as the night ends, begins the day,
The colour grey is nothing without white,
Understand what I’m trying to say.
You are a part of me my darling,
How could you think I’m away?
Wake up and embrace your life, my love,
I know you’ll find your way.”
I opened my eyes at dawn,
A single star shone in the sky,
“ I understand what you were saying dear Mother,
You will always be in my heart,
I’ll face this life with courage Mother,
Forever like you have always taught!”
