A Poem – The Mermaid of Clearwater

Down in the depths of the deep

Where a little light can only seep.

Lies a kingdom defined by lore

Wealth and power was its core.

Till the stretches the blue ran

Over two-thirds did it fan.

The kingdom known near and far

From the stone to the star.

In this kingdom of water

Where steps of none falter.

Lived the purest of all

From whom praises fall.

Her hair blacker than ebony

Her mind untouched by any felony.

Her skin fairer than the alabaster

Her lips curved up in laughter.

Her tail was greener than the deepest jade

Other such beauty can never be made.

Different from the others she was

Her beauty was the cause.

Her beauty held many entranced

Her wit left all enchanted.

Her grace was divine

Her poise, the epitome of sublime.

She was the maiden

Her trust unshaken.

She lived true and steady

She lived happy and merry.

She was truer than the clearest of water

Lies in her mouth did they falter.

Her eyes shone with heartfelt honesty

Royalty dotted her ancestry.

Unknown to her, jealousy spread around

Victims many it found.

The other maidens formed a clan

Together they hatched a devil’s plan.

A devious plan it was

Fire in the hatchers did it rouse.

Steely glint in their eyes

Their lips mouthed warcries.

In the dead of the night did they attack

The sleepy palace was taken aback.

The soldiers fought but in vain

Clear water got an ugly stain.

The mermaid jumped into the fray

Till the end did she stay.

Suddenly she saw something dart

A spear went through her heart.

The morning sun saw red

Clear water wept for the dead.

Far away on the shores of a distant state

The wind sang of a dying breath.

No longer remained the maiden so pure

No longer remained the smile so sure.

They extinguished the unclouded flame

Like other waters, Clear water became the same.
