Short Story: “Something Significant” by Rajlaxmi

Dear Writer, please find below our objective review comment based on five key elements of short stories:

Character: Story has one main character. Characterization was done nicely starting with first paragraph and then continuing along with progression of the story. There are other characters but only to support settings and plot; also these characters appear very short in the story without having any individual importance.  This is very good style for short story writing – develop only one character and use others in setting and plot as role such as friend, priest, grandma etc.

Setting: Setting was done poetically using appropriate metaphors. It was also restricted to very short time period – hardly a day.  Surrounding was not explained in detail but was sufficient just like spice in Indian curry. However it is advisable to be generous in decorating setting when you know you can restrict story to be short and can closely tie it with theme. Overall it is good setting, particularly in this story; nonetheless it would be interesting to see your setting in romantic or suspense or horror short story.

Plot: Opening is very good. It is rare to see contradiction in first paragraph that is brought in this story superbly. Good selection of narrator and style of narration. Plot is always tied with theme and one can find “funny” element everywhere. Story ends with a message – very impressive for funny or hilarious story.

Conflict: Due to plot of the story, one may not find intense conflict in this story. If any, perhaps this point should be taken for bringing further excellence in your writing. Big question may follow, then, how? And there come you, the writer, to answer it. Nonetheless one possible way to create conflict would have been leading protagonist to organize same pooja.

Theme: Theme is very clear. Setting, character, and plot support theme. This is very good.

Overall it is a high quality short story. We recommend you to write suspense or thriller short story to further excel in setting and conflict creation in short story. Keep writing and we would love to review and provide you feedback.

Having said the above, we strongly believe that story is an art and every art is invaluable – there is nothing good or bad as art is beyond boundaries of these adjectives. Therefore the creator is the best person to decide whether the creation meets her expectation. We like your story in total and our comments are just objective comparison with the patterns we observed in most liked short stories.
