On the evening of the very same day Naina called him. Ankul picked up the phone. Naina said that she has told everything about them to her father Shri Kantilal Sen. Her father at first was furious on hearing all this but her mother and her sister finally controlled the situation. Finally her father agreed to meet Ankul tomorrow at 10 A.M.. So Naina asked Ankul to come to her house tomorrow morning and have a talk with her father. By saying this, she disconnected the line. Ankul also disconnected the phone but his heartbeat started beating a bit faster than usual. After all tomorrow is his examination of life and of course of his friendship relationship.
Ankul did not sleep properly the whole night. He was tensed mixed with a splice of excitement. On the next morning, he woke up at 5 ‘ O clock and was waiting for the clock to rang 10 A.M. Finally when the clock rang 9 A.M. he got ready to go and meet her father. Ankul, whose favorite dress was a green round neck T shirt and a blue jeans that day wore a formal white collar shirt and a formal pant in order to impress Naina’s father Shri Kantilal Sen, who was a high court judge.
Finally, he went into the main road and rode a bus. The bus was moving slowly and his tension and excitement was growing. He took a seat in the Senior Citizen seat and was just thinking about what he will be telling her father and what would he be telling him. In the mean time, a man came and stood near Ankul’s seat. Ankul did not pay any attention to the other passengers and nor to the passenger who was standing in front of him. The man then called Ankul and asked him to leave the seat as it is a Senior Citizen seat and that man will be sitting there. Ankul, on the other hand, was already irritated about the hot weather outside and the slow pace of the bus and obviously about the future meeting of him with her father. Therefore Ankul, at first did not pay any attention to the man’s words. The man then again repeated the same words with a rich tone.
Ankul then turned towards him and said, “Well, Mr. whatever, I do not care what are you saying.” with irritation being his mind occupied with all sorts of tensional thoughts.
The man then also got hyperactive and said, “I also do not care who are you, but I assume that you are not blind. This is a Senior Citizen seat and therefore I deserve to seat here.”
Ankul then said harshly, “Well a Senior Citizen is that person who is above 65 years of age and what is the proof that you belong to that category. So just go to hell and do not disturb me.”
All these led to an agreement between the two. Finally a chaos was created in the bus and finally the conductor came and asked Ankul to leave the seat to that man. Ankul then got up and shouted,
“Ok Fine. I will neither sit in this seat and nor I will sit in this bus.”
By saying this, he then without giving the fare walked out of the running bus. Still the chaos inside the bus could be heard. Ankul, then finally took the next bus and went to the destination. By this time, the clock already rung 11 A.M. He was late. As soon as he reached the front of the house, he saw Naina in a nice white salwar suit waiting for him to come. She was looking absolutely stunning and pure. As soon as Naina saw him coming, she went running towards him and interrogated angrily, “Where have you been? My father has been waiting for so long for you.”
Without listening to Ankul’s justification as to why he was late, she by holding his hand took him to her father who was sitting in an easy chair in their beautiful garden. As soon as Ankul saw Naina’s father, he got surprised. He was none but the man at the bus with whom he had an unpleasant meeting a few minutes before. It was a nasty shock for him. On the other hand, when Naina’s father saw Ankul, he was also surprised but he did not let his daughter to know that he had met him earlier and nor did Ankul. Ankul understood that his first impression has already been damaged. Ankul then came slowly and took a seat on the other side of the man’s chair.
Mr. Kantilal Sen then said, “Well, son. I have already seen your manners and now I want to have a little talk with you and I am pretty sure of the fact that we both know the subject matter of the topic.”
Ankul just listened to his words without saying a single word. Naina, who was standing besides them, was asked by her father to go inside the house as his father wanted to talk with Ankul privately. Naina obeyed to her father’s words. Mr. Kantilal Sen continued looking towards Ankul, “Well, tell me something about your family background.”
Ankul replied sadly, “I have no family. I am an orphan, sir. My mother died after my birth and my father was an alcohol addict. One night, when I was only 10 years old, my father was coughing very badly. Finally blood came out from his mouth and when he was taken to the hospital, he had already expired.”
Kantilal Sen then said, “I am so sorry to hear that.” Though his facial expression told that it was just a formal sorry and not a feeling from the heart.
But still Ankul nodded his head and said slowly, “It is ok, sir.”
After a few seconds of halt, Mr. Kantilal Sen enquired Ankul, “Well, tell me about your plans in life. I mean that how will you earn your livelihood in future?”
Ankul answered, “Sir, actually I do not have a knack for job. I am planning of opening a detective agency. I will be taking up a course on surveillance, legal and detective training and then set up my own private detective agency.”
Kantilal Sen then said instantly standing up from his chair with a smile in his face, ‘Well brilliant. I really wish you good luck. But now I have got some urgent work to do and therefore now I will have to leave now. I will talk to you later. And yes. Next time, you see a senior citizen in the bus, just try to show some manners and respect..”by saying this he left.
Ankul did not dare to ask him about his opinion regarding him and Naina. After that Ankul also went to his home bidding Naina BYE, who was standing at the veranda of the first floor and looking towards him. On the next day Ankul was sleeping in his house when suddenly the house door knocked. Ankul went up and opened the door and he saw it was Anamika who was standing on the other side of the door. Anamika was the sister of Naina . She came and handed Ankul a letter. She said that Naina had sent her with this letter to give you. By saying this she came inside the house and asked Ankul to close the door of the house. Ankul closed the door and opened the folded piece of letter that Naina had sent him via her sister and read its contents. The letter said the following:-
“I could not call you as my father had taken away my mobile phone. So, I send Anamika with the letter, the only family member whom I can trust. My father had disapproved our marriage and he had finally fixed my marriage with his friend and business partner Abhirup Ray’s son. The day after tomorrow is my engagement and on the coming Sunday is my marriage. Please do something. Please. Either you do something in these few days or lose me forever.”
Ankul could not understand that what he will do right now. Ankul then asked Anamika innocently, “But, why did your father did not like me?”
Anamika at first hesitated to tell Ankul the real reason for her father’s disliking for Ankul as she thought that it could affect Ankul’s sentiments, but, on repeated requests from Ankul, she disclosed the real reason. Anamika then said hesitatingly without looking towards Ankul’s brown eyes,
“My father told that he would not allow his daughter to be a wife of someone who neither has a future plan in life to properly feed his wife nor has any proper family background.” Anamika continued, ‘Moreover, he also told about your past meeting with him in the bus. He said that you neither have manners and respect for elders, nor any proper and secure future plan and nor any proper family background and good family culture.”
All these words straightly attacked Ankul’s heart. It was as if someone had inserted a big sharp sword right into his chest. Anamika, who still upto that point of time had not made an eye contact with Ankul, then moved her eye balls to look at him when she noticed that his eyes has became pale and he was silently looking downwards in helplessness sadness. Anamika felt guilty.
Anamika then said slowly to Ankul, “Look, this was the reason for which I was hesitating to tell all these stuff to you. I did not mean to offend you. I am really sorry.”
Ankul then looked towards her and said with an artificial pale smile on his face, “No. No. Please, do not be sorry. It is not your mistake. After all, you haven’t said anything bad about me.” Ankul continued, “But, I was thinking about Naina. I will have to do something. I just can’t let her alone in her distress and problem.”
So, both of them started thinking that what they should do now in order to help Naina. But finally a plan stroke Ankul’s brain and Anamika also decided to help him with his plan. One night, as per the plan, he went silently to Naina’s house with the help of Anamika and then they escaped from her home. After that, on the following day, they went to the Registrar’s office and they finally got married there, their witness being Anamika and Anamika’s one friend. After that when they came back to Naina’s home, Mr. Kantilal Sen was furious with anger. He was about to kill Ankul. Naina and Ankul along with Anamika and her mother made several efforts to make him calm him but they were unsuccessful.
Mr. Kantilal Sen then finally said angrily, “You are no daughter of mine. You are dead for me and for you I am dead. You are an outsider and I have no place for outsiders in my house. Just get out. I don’t care where you go—I don’t care whether you live or die, just get lost. As for us, we have only one daughter.”
Naina cried in front of her father and pleaded to him to accept their relationship but her father did not hear her words. Mr. Kantilal Sen then finally broke his relationship with his younger daughter in spite of repeated efforts of them and Anamika to make him calm. He was more concerned about what the society would comment rather than his daughter’s happiness. He did not approve her marriage and therefore they had no option than to leave them and go to some other place where they can leave peacefully and start their new life forgetting their past. So, they went to Kolkata in search of job, happiness and peace.
Ankul started working as a sales manager and Naina on the other hand started working as a marketing administer of some other company. They had set up a new small but happy world of their own in these six years. The pains and tears of the past had gone into sleep in some dark corners of their heart. One day when Ankul came back from his work tired, he noticed a very jolly smile on Naina’s face. He came and keeping his briefcase over the sofa and kissing her on her cheek asked her, “What happened, darling? You are looking very happy today. Is there any good news?”
Naina did not say a word but gave him a folded piece of paper. Ankul opened it and saw it was some doctor’s prescription. Ankul did not understand that. Naina then hugged him and said in a whispering tone in his ears, “We are going to be parents.”
As soon as Ankul heard the two words- “We” and “Parents”, he was just overwhelmed by happiness. He could not believe that Naina is pregnant and he is going to be a father and Naina a mother. Ankul then quickly hugged her and started kissing her all over her face as an expression of his happiness. His eyes became wet due to happiness. After that a few months passed. Naina was sleeping in the bed and Ankul was doing something in the kitchen.
Suddenly Naina shouted in pain. Ankul went running towards her and asked her ,”What happened?”
Naina could not say anything but she pointed towards her swelled belly and said “Liver Pain.” Ankul then quickly took her to the nearby hospital . The doctors took her to the operation theatre in order to diagnose her and Ankul waited for her outside. After an hour, the doctor came outside the operation theatre and came towards Ankul. As the doctor was walking towards Ankul, he was getting tensed by the every passage of his step. Finally the doctor came and said with a smile to Ankul,
“Congratulations! Your wife has given birth to a beautiful male child. You are now a father.”
Ankul was just so happy at that moment that it could not be expressed in words. Ankul then asked the doctor that if he could go and meet his wife. The doctor though gave him permission but stated him that his wife needs to rest at that moment. Finally he went inside the operation theatre and saw his wife and his newly born baby. Ankul at first went towards Naina and sat besides her. She was looking tired and sweat was pouring down from her forehead but she was just staring at her child with eyes full of dreams. She then asked Ankul to give the child in her arms. Ankul did as per her request. Naina just kissed the child in his forehead as if it was the most precious thing that they have ever come across. Ankul also took them in their arms carefully and just said to himself looking upwards, “Thank you GOD.”
Ankul was playing with the little fingers of his new born baby and Naina was just looking towards the child with eyes full of dreams and happiness. After a few days Naina was discharged from the hospital and she came back home with her child. But they had a problem . They could not decide what to name the new born baby. Various names were suggested. Suddenly they thought to name the new born baby as the combination of the names of his parents- Naina and Ankul. Finally they thought to name him Nakul- “NA” from Naina and “KUL” from Ankul. So finally they named the new born baby as Nakul. They just looked towards the new born baby and said, “Nakul” and the child gave an innocent smile with his toothless mouth. His innocent smile filled Ankul and Naina’s life with happiness and happiness.
Naina and Ankul both used to work outside and so they need someone to look after their baby. Therefore they appointed a servant Gopal Halder in order to look after their baby and do some household work. Gopal was approximately of the same age as Ankul. He was reliable and honest and was also of a nice nature. Years passed and Nakul started growing up. Nakul was admitted to a nearby English medium school. Nakul did not prove out to be as meritorious as his parents. He was a mediocre student but still his parents were well satisfied with his overall performance.
Nakul had already completed 9 years of age. Today is 13th February and today Nakul will complete 10 years of his life. Naina and Ankul had planned something special in order to celebrate their child’s special day. Therefore Naina and Ankul asked Gopal to pick up Nakul from his school and take him home where they will surprise Nakul on the occasion of his happy birthday. Therefore Gopal went to Nakul’s house. Finally the final bell of the school rang and Nakul came out of his school gate.
As soon as he saw Gopal, he came running towards him and then he by holding his hand went towards his house. As soon as Nakul and Gopal came in front of their house, they saw a huge crowd gathered in front of their house. Nakul and Gopal had no clue as to what happened inside. Gopal then asked Nakul to stay back there and he will be coming in a moment. Nakul did as per Gopal’s words. Gopal then went inside the house. As soon as he entered the house door, he saw few police officers roaming inside the house. As soon as the police officers noticed Gopal, one of the police officers came towards him and asked, “Who are you?”
Gopal gave a counter question to the devil like body by asking, “What happened, Sir?”
The police officer then said in a rich tone, “First answer me and then I shall answer yours.”
Gopal then said in a nervous tone, “I am Gopal Halder. I am the servant of this house. What happened here Sir? Is there any sort of problem?”
The policeman replied, “Yes.”
Gopal then asked nervously, “What happened , Sir?”
The police officer replied, “Go straight to the bedroom and you will understand whatever happened.”
Gopal, then without wasting, a single moment of time ran towards the bedroom of Naina and Ankul and whatever he saw was just shocking. He saw Ankul and Naina lying dead over there. The death that they had was also brutal and terrified. No one would have wished to see such a painful and horrible site with their sight in their entire lifetime. Ankul was lying dead in the floor. His hands were tied at his back with his mouth tied and a steel rod has been inserted inside his head.
So, it was clear from the prevailing circumstances that Ankul has been tortured to death in a very brutal manner purely with the cruel intention of giving him utmost pain and suffering during his last breath. On the other hand, Naina was lying dead on the bed. Her hands were also tied at her back and the murderer had cut her throat. Her mouth was also tied. Nothing was missing from the house, so the police authority cannot understand the motive behind these brutal killing. According to the police authority, the reason of the murder is personal grievance. From the blood samples that the police collected, the police came to the conclusion that the murder has been done 2 to 3 hours ago and not before that. So, they thought that it could be Gopal who has done all that but due to the lack of circumstantial evidences and proofs, the police could not do anything. The police went away making the investigation pending like many other cases.
Gopal then came out of the house and told Nakul everything. Nakul was just stunned on hearing all this from Gopal. Moreover Gopal did not want Nakul to look at the horrible site of the murder and so he requested the police officers to take the bodies away in the ambulance without showing them to Nakul. The police officers kept Gopal’s request as they also thought it inappropriate to show such a horrible scene to a 10 year old boy and moreover the horrible one is of his parents. It will have a very bad impact on him.
So they took away the body in the ambulance without showing them to Nakul. Nakul just started crying heavily and tried to run after the ambulance but Gopal stopped him by taking him lovingly in his arms and saying sympathetically,
“I am not your parents. I am just a servant of your house. I know I can never be your parents but I promise you that from today, you are my son. I am not saying that from today, you will never feel the loss of your parents, but I promise that I will do my best to make up for your loss.”
Nakul then with his tearful eyes looked towards Gopal and said with his shivering voice, “From today, you are my only family. Please never leave me like mother and father did.”
Gopal also got very much emotional at that point of time but he did not let tears come in his eyes. Rather he just wiped the tears in Nakul’s eyes with his hand and taking him in a more comfortable manner in his arms, he went inside the house. Nakul became orphan on the occasion of his birthday. His birthday became the death day of his parents. Nakul was in Gopal’s arms. Gopal at first went to close the bedroom door of Naina and Ankul where they were murdered. Though Nakul was in his arms, he could see the red floor in the bedroom due to his parent’s blood. But Nakul did not say a single word. Gopal then took Nakul into Nakul’s bedroom. While Nakul was being taken into his bedroom, he saw that on the table, a beautiful chocolate cake is kept on which it was written in cream,
“Happy Birthday Nakul—– From Mom and Dad.”
Nakul did not say a word, but tears again started running from his eyes. After that Gopal took him to his bedroom and asked him to take a sleep and he will again talk to him next morning. While Gopal was about to leave the room , Nakul just asked in a low tone, which could be heard very properly at that time of night“Am I a very bad boy?”.
Gopal asked him, ‘What? No. Not at all. You are the most wonderful boy of this world.”
Nakul said, “Then why did GOD take away my parents?”
Gopal did not have an answer to his apparently simple question. Gopal just came towards Nakul and kissing on his forehead and rubbing his hand gently over his forehead and hairs asked him to close his eyes and said him to sleep. After that a few minutes passed and when Gopal realized that Nakul had fallen asleep, Gopal silently went out of his room.
