THE RESULT DAY
By this time, 10 years have passed. Nakul, Ellias and Barsha are pursuing their B.Com from a reputed college in Kolkata. They are in the 3rd year of college and Sameera is in the 1st year of the same college. Nakul, Ellias and Barsha had just given their 3rd year examinations and Sameera is now preparing herself for her next examination. It was a Friday. Nakul was sitting in his house quietly recollecting his old memories about his father, his mother. He could not help himself stop remembering the horrible past of his 10th birthday.
He was sitting when suddenly the phone rang and he went and picked up the phone as Gopal was not in the house at that moment. It was Barsha on the other side. She said in an exciting and hurrying voice,
“Nakul, do you know, that our final year’s result has been uploaded in the college website by the college authority without any prior notice. Check it out first. I am also checking it out. Do inform me about your result. Ok Bye.Call you later.”
Nakul after hearing that quickly put down the phone and ran towards his computer room to switch on the computer. He was about to switch on the computer when again the phone rang. He knew that it will be Ellias and he will also be informing him of the same information that Barsha has provided him a few seconds ago. He jumped out of his sitting chair and proving him wrong it was Barsha on the other side of the phone again.
She said, “Oh! I forgot to mention. Please inform the matter to the king of laziness (she meant Ellias). I am sure he will now be sleeping with his beautiful dreams.”
Before Nakul could ask her about her result, she disconnected the line. Nakul thought that instead of calling him back and asking him to call Ellias, she herself could have called Ellias and told him the entire matter. Nakul then without wasting a single moment of time called Ellias over the phone but he did not pick up the phone. After that Nakul dialed his landline number and the phone was picked up by Ellias’s sister Sameera. Nakul asked Sameera about Ellias and she replied that he is now sleeping. Nakul just thought to himself that Barsha really knows Ellias very well.
Nakul then asked Sameera to call Ellias as it is an urgent matter and Sameera then went and called Ellias. Ellias came slowly towards the phone and picked up the receiver and said in a lazy , sleepy tone, “Hello.” Nakul then told him the entire matter. After hearing that Ellias’s sleep flied away and he was really tensed. He jumped out of bed and switched on the computer. The booting process of the computer was really driving his nerves down at that moment of tension and excitement. After opening the HOME PAGE in the internet, when he was about to write the web address, the link got disrupted.
It was really difficult to wait at that moment of tension and excitement. But he had no other option than to wait at that moment of time. Fortunately the link came after 2 to 3 minutes. He entered the website of the college. After writing his roll number in the appropriate place, when he pressed ENTER KEY to see the result, there occurred a power failure in the locality. Ellias just felt so annoying at that moment. But then he got the idea to open the internet from his mobile phone and thought to himself that he is so smart and intelligent and smiled in his mind hopelessly without knowing the upcoming sequences of troubles.
He took the mobile phone in his hand and then he suddenly remembered that his mobile has zero balance and his internet is also not free. In a moment his smiling face turned faded and pale. He just got dam frustrated at that moment. Then Ellias was left with no other option than to call Nakul over the landline and give him his roll number and he might tell him his result. But Ellias thought to himself in his mind that his fate is so bad on that very day, the phone line may also be dead. But when he picked up the phone to call Nakul, the phone line was fortunately not dead. So he made no delay to dial Nakul’s number. But when he dialled Nakul’s number, the line was found engaged.
As time was passing, his level of tension, irritation, frustration and anger was reaching at its peak. He then without waiting for a single moment of time went to the nearest cyber café with some money in his hand. He did not even take his wallet and went to the nearest cyber café in his three quarter pant and a normal home T shirt. When he entered the cyber café, the café manager asked for an identity proof. He was at a hurry and so he did not bring his PAN card which was in his wallet. He requested the café manager to consider him but the café manager said clearly that rules are rules. Ellias’s eyes just became red due to anger at his own fate. After that the café manager said that if he wants to use the internet, then he will have to give double the amount of actual charge. Ellias then said in a somewhat astonishing manner,
“But I think you said rules are rules.”
The café manager laughed and answered, “Common man. Rules are made to be broken only if sufficient price is paid.”
Ellias understood that he is in a problematic situation and the café manager was taking advantage of the situation. But Ellias did not have an option. So he paid the double charge and he finally saw his result. He passed with approximately 75% in aggregate. Then after paying the double charge, when he was returning home occupied by the thoughts of the results of his friends that whether they had done better or worse than him, he came in front of his house. He saw that power has returned to his house. With a growling face he entered the house and asked Sameera,
“When did the blo*dy current came?”
She answered in a very calm and quiet voice, “Brother, as soon as you went out of the house, it came.”
It was more frustrating to him. But Ellias has now been a bit calm as he is now pretty much satisfied about his performance in his examination. He then came and took a bathe and then he went into the room where his father Mr. Sujoy Khan was watching a golf game and his mother was reading a magazine. Sameera was also there. She was busy combing her hair in a stylish manner. So nobody paid any attention of Ellias’s silent entrance into the room.
Ellias said, “I have something to tell you.”
Ellias’s father without turning his eyes from the golf match said, “Yes.” His mother and Sameera also turned towards him but said nothing.
Ellias said, ‘My final year’s result has come out.”
These seven words drew everyone’s attention. None present there said anything but all of them were having the same questions in their mind, “How is his result?”
Ellias said in a calm voice, “75%.”
Ellias’s father walked out of the bed and hugged Ellias with a smile and said, “Congrats son.”
Sameera also said, “Congratulations, brother” with a smile on her white face making her more beautiful.
While Ellias’s father was hugging him, he said in a whispering tone to Ellias in such a manner so that Ellias’s mother do not hear them, “Son, I bet you, now after our hug is over, your mother will come and say to you that she expected at least 80% from you. But do not worry. I am very much happy with your performance.”
Ellias also smiled a little but he did not made that smile appear in his face so that his mother could see them. Ellias’s father was proved correct within a few seconds. After his father’s hug was over, his mother came and said in a serious tone, “Well, I really expected 80% from you.”
As soon as she said the words, Ellias could not control his laughter and laughed in front of his mother. His mother then said in an angry tone , “Did I say anything funny?”
After that she without saying a word, went out of the room to go to the other room. As she left the room, Ellias and his father looked at each other and gave a shaky laugh which luckily did not fall into Ellias’s mother’s ears. After that however Ellias said that he would now be going and making a call to Nakul and Barsha and ask them about their result. By saying this, he left the room and he went towards his computer room. He then dialed Nakul’s number and the line was neither engaged nor dead this time.
When Nakul picked up the phone, Ellias said, “What the hell were you doing, when I called you 1 hour ago? Why your phone line was engaged?”
Nakul replied thinking a bit that he was actually talking with Barsha about her result.
Nakul then asked, “Well, by the way, howz your result?”
Ellias replied in a confident manner, “Well, I have scored 75% in aggregate with 81% in Indian Government Accounting. Well, what’s your news?”
Nakul then said, “Congratulations dude. I have also got exactly 75 % in aggregate.”
Nakul then continued, “I could have got better marks if I have given my Cost Accounting examination properly. You might remember that I was having fever that day. There I scored only 49%.”
Ellias also said, “I would also have got better marks in the examination if I would have studied a bit more. But you know that after each examination , I say the same thing.”
Nakul laughed a bit and said, “Oh yes and also the same resolution-next time, I will work hard.”
Ellias then said, “Well, what’s about ‘beer’( Ellias calls Barsha as beer in order to annoy her. Actually beer comes from Barsha Ray or B.R. or beer.)
Nakul replied, “She has done excellently. She scored 87% in aggregate with her highest marks in Tax being 94 out of 100.”
Ellias had a little bit of male ego. His mind did not accept the fact that a girl has beaten him in aggregate. But after all she is a friend. He must be happy and he should not allow his fake ego and narrow men mentality come in between and create a crack in their friendship. Ellias just said in a hopeless and low tone,
“Wow, that is great. But now I understand, why people say, Ladies First. Truly ladies are always first, at least in studies.”
By saying this, he just bid his friend GOOD NIGHT and disconnected the line. After that he called Barsha over the phone and congratulated her on her performance and she also did the same to Ellias. Over the phone only, they made a plan to meet tomorrow at Barsha’s house at 10 A.M.. Finally, they had completed graduation and that calls for a party. Now, they just cannot wait for tomorrow’s sunrise.
